Client
David Wilson Homes, a part of Barratt Developments PLC, is one of the United Kingdom’s leading homebuilders with a reputation for constructing high-quality homes. With over 50 years of experience, David Wilson Homes is renowned for its commitment to excellence in design, sustainability, and customer satisfaction.
Problem
David Wilson Homes (South West) Ltd are developing, alongside other national house builders, a major development “Beaufort Vale” at Siston, Warmley, Nr Bristol. The site design called for several retaining walls and the problem was that the soil was very friable and the need to construct properties first led to very restricted site conditions. Speed of construction was also a necessity.
Solution
Design Engineers decided on Polyagg as a solution to the problem for several reasons.
Firstly, the engineered volume of geo‐synthetic aggregate allowed for greater control on
imported material. Secondly, the same quality of control enabled a dramatic reduction of
cart away from the areas. Thirdly, the restricted site conditions allowed the application of
Polyagg, which removed the need for dumper visits to the areas, and, finally, the bonus of
speed of installation.
Method
Commencing with the trial required excavation of trench adjacent to an existing wall measuring 1m deep x 75m long x 350mm wide and the excavated soil kept to one side. The Polyagg bundles were installed into the excavated trench in two layers. The trench was then backfilled using the retained soil which instantly eradicated the use of aggregate and the need for intensive plant movement due to the restricted area to be constructed.
”All my work force were impressed by the ease and speed of the installation of Polyagg, my engineers are satisfied as to it’s performance and I have no hesitation in recommending the product for use in similar circumstances”.
– Mr Chris Lavell, the Construction Director for David Wilson Homes
Conclusion
The completed trial resulted in the following benefits:
- Manual handling in installation reduced greatly
- Less labour & 50% reduction in plant usage
- No imported aggregate required
- Health & Safety issues reduced due to ease of installation
- Overall cost reductions
Both sub contracting ground worker and developer’s contracts manager were impressed with the qualities of Polyagg.
Mr Paul Robins the manager for Westmode Contracting Ltd, Swindon quoted “I was very impressed with the ease of installation of Polyagg, which proved, in this case, to justify the Polyagg capabilities and on a cost basis reduced labour time against the traditional method considerably due to the speed and easy handling aspects”.
Mr Nigel Harris, the Contracts Manager for David Wilson Homes (South West), wrote saying “The Polyagg and Polybed system’s supplied by Forest Products for retaining wall drainage is the best innovation I have seen on the building site for some years. Manual handling and access to sloping areas with dumpers is reduced greatly”
