Case Study‚ Wakefield Council
Staff at the Highways Department at Wakefield Council are using Forest Drainage Polybed products for a wide range of applications across West Yorkshire’s road network.
In Harewood Close, Ferrybridge, several properties were flooded because highway gullies drained to a poorly maintained soakaway system. Engineers designed a solution using an 80 metre combination of Polybed and Polyagg products which proved to be significantly more cost effective and easier and quicker to install than a standard soakaway construction. Despite several bouts of adverse weather since the work was completed, there has been no sign of further flooding and feedback from local residents is very positive.
A different problem arose in Hawthorne Grove, Ackworth, where an inspection before routine resurfacing work revealed a previously undiscovered spring under the carriageway. This had caused repeated damage to the road surface and resulted in dangerous icy conditions for motorists during the winter months. 60 metres of Polybed units were installed to direct the spring water away from the area, eliminating the problem and reducing the necessity for repeated resurfacing work.
To help prevent flooding, recent legislation dictates that highways should not be drained to sewage systems which may become overloaded. When problems arose in Headlands Lane, Knottingley, engineers therefore had to find an alternative way of draining the highway. Using a combination of Polybed and Polyagg products they constructed a soakaway system in the verge which is also proving to be extremely effective.
Highway Drainage Engineer Andrew Varley of Wakefield Council is very impressed with these results. Using Polybed has saved us a massive amount of time and money and minimises the need to transport vast amounts of spoil to landfill sites. The units are lightweight and easy to install which also reduces Health and Safety risks to staff. Polybed products have proved to be the ideal solution for a range of problems and we’re using them more and more frequently across the region.
